How to source electronics from China

Sourcing electronics from China means three things done in the right order: find a real manufacturer (Shenzhen's Huaqiangbei, the Global Sources electronics shows in Hong Kong, or Canton Fair Phase 1), lock the exact certifications your destination market demands (CE, RoHS and — for wireless — RED in the EU; FCC in the US), and inspect with function and safety testing before you pay the balance. Electronics fail differently from garments or homeware: a dead-on-arrival rate of a few percent or a missing certificate can make an entire container unsellable or illegal to import. This is the field playbook.

Electronics is the highest-reward, highest-risk category a first-time importer can pick. Margins are good, the products are compact (great CBM), and the supplier base is enormous — but the compliance surface is unforgiving and the defect modes are electrical, not just cosmetic. Get the sequence right and it's very profitable. Skip a step and you find out at customs or in a warranty avalanche.

Where to actually find electronics suppliers

There are three credible field channels, plus the online layer. Each serves a different stage.

Shenzhen and Huaqiangbei

Shenzhen is the physical center of gravity for consumer electronics. Huaqiangbei — a dense cluster of multi-storey electronics markets in the Futian district — is where you see components, finished gadgets, accessories and OEM samples in person, often in the same building as the workshops that assemble them. It's unbeatable for reconnaissance, sample buying and understanding what a category actually costs. It is not where you place a serious factory order — the stalls are traders and small assemblers. Use it to learn, then trace back to the real manufacturer.

The Hong Kong electronics shows (Global Sources)

The Global Sources Consumer Electronics show runs twice a year at AsiaWorld-Expo in Hong Kong — in 2026 the dates are 11–14 April and 11–14 October — alongside sister shows for mobile electronics and electronic components (Global Sources / MEHK). Canton Fair Phase 1

The Canton Fair (China Import and Export Fair, Guangzhou) runs in three phases; Phase 1 is the electronics and appliances phase — electronics, household electrical appliances, lighting, hardware and industrial equipment. In 2026 Phase 1 runs 15–19 April and 15–19 October (Canton Fair 2026 guide). It's larger and more manufacturer-heavy than the Hong Kong shows but requires a mainland visa and more legwork on the floor.

The online layer

Alibaba, Made-in-China and Global Sources' online directory are where you shortlist and re-contact. Treat online listings as leads, not proof — the fair floor and a factory audit are where you separate a manufacturer from a trading company reselling someone else's board.

Certifications: the part that sinks importers

A product without the right certification for its destination is not a bargain — it's un-sellable inventory. Certification is market-specific, product-specific, and non-negotiable. Here is the map for the three markets most buyers care about.

A few things to internalize:

  • CE is a self-declaration backed by a technical file, not a badge someone grants you. You (or your EU importer) sign the Declaration of Conformity and must hold the test reports. A supplier saying "it's CE" without a real test report and DoC is telling you nothing.
  • RoHS restricts ten hazardous substances (lead, mercury, cadmium and others) to a maximum of 0.1% by weight per substance — 0.01% for cadmium (RoHS overview).
  • UKCA has effectively become optional. Since the Product Safety and Metrology Regulations 2024, Great Britain recognizes CE marking indefinitely for the large majority of consumer electronics, so most importers ship on CE alone (Landmark Global). Confirm your specific product category — a few classes (e.g. medical devices) are excluded.
  • FCC splits by radio. A device that intentionally transmits (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, an RF dongle) needs full Certification through an FCC-recognized Telecommunications Certification Body and gets an FCC ID; a purely digital device that only unintentionally radiates can use the lighter Supplier's Declaration of Conformity (SDoC) (FCC / Compliance Gate). Never accept "FCC done" without knowing which path — an SDoC does not cover a wireless module.

Put certification in the purchase order in writing, name the specific standards, and require the supplier to hand over the test reports and the signed Declaration of Conformity, not a photo of a mark. Marks are trivially faked; a lab report from an accredited body is not.

MOQ and pricing dynamics

Electronics MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity — the smallest batch a factory will run) is driven by components and tooling, not just labor. A factory that has to buy a reel of chips, cut a custom PCB or open an injection mold needs volume to amortize it, so MOQs of 500–1,000 units are common for anything semi-custom, and can be far higher when a new mold is involved. Off-the-shelf products with the supplier's own logo removed carry the lowest MOQs.

Price moves with three levers: volume tiers (the quoted unit price at 500 vs 5,000 is a different number — always ask for the ladder), specification (battery capacity, chipset grade, memory, certification level all move cost), and component-market timing (memory and display prices swing with the global component cycle). Because bill-of-materials cost dominates, there's a hard floor a legitimate factory can't go under — a quote far below the pack usually means downgraded components, a recycled/refurbished chipset, or a certificate that doesn't exist. Quality control specific to electronics

Cosmetic QC is not enough for electronics. You are inspecting for function and safety, and both need to be written into the inspection scope:

  • Function testing on every sampled unit — power on, run through the actual feature set (pairing, charging, buttons, screen, sensors), not just "does it turn on." Set a target DOA (dead-on-arrival) rate and make it a rejection ground.
  • Safety checks — insulation and hi-pot testing where relevant, correct rated components, and the right plug/adapter certified for the destination market. A wrong or uncertified power adapter can fail the whole shipment.
  • Battery and shipping compliance — lithium cells trigger dangerous-goods rules; confirm UN 38.3 test summaries and correct packaging before booking freight.
  • Firmware and version match — verify the firmware version and any regional settings match the approved golden sample; a silent firmware change can break certification.

Run this as a pre-shipment inspection (PSI) by an independent third party against an agreed AQL (Acceptance Quality Limit — the defect rate you'll tolerate), so pass/fail is a number, not an argument. Key documents to collect

Before the balance leaves your account, you should hold: the signed Declaration of Conformity and the underlying test reports (CE/RED, FCC grant or SDoC, RoHS report, CB report if used); the commercial invoice and packing list with the correct HS code (Harmonized System tariff code) for duty; the bill of lading; the PSI report with photos and AQL result; and for anything with a battery, the UN 38.3 summary and MSDS. Missing paperwork is the most common reason an electronics shipment is held at the border.

FAQ

Do I need CE and FCC, or just one?

It depends entirely on where you sell. CE (plus RoHS, and RED if it's wireless) is for the European Union; Great Britain now accepts CE indefinitely for most electronics. FCC is for the United States. If you sell into both regions you need both — they're separate legal regimes testing different things (FCC is radio-emission focused, CE bundles EMC, electrical safety and radio). One certificate never covers the other market.

What's a realistic MOQ for electronics?

For an off-the-shelf product with light branding, MOQs often start around 100–500 units. Anything semi-custom — custom PCB, custom firmware, a new enclosure mold — typically starts at 500–1,000 and climbs with tooling cost. The MOQ reflects component reels and mold amortization, so it's genuinely harder to move than on simple goods; negotiate on the price ladder and lead time rather than expecting a factory to break a component minimum.

How do I know a "CE certificate" is real?

Ask for the test reports from a named accredited laboratory and the signed Declaration of Conformity, not a photo of the CE mark. CE is a self-declaration: the legal proof is the technical file, not the logo, which is trivially copied. For wireless products, confirm the report covers the RED radio directive, and cross-check the lab exists. If a supplier can't produce the underlying reports, treat the product as uncertified.

What extra QC does electronics need versus other products?

Function and safety testing. Beyond the usual cosmetic and quantity checks, insist on powering up and running the full feature set on each sampled unit, a target DOA rate, safety/insulation checks, the correct certified power adapter for the market, and UN 38.3 compliance for any lithium battery. A unit that looks perfect can still be electrically dead or non-compliant — that's the failure mode a cosmetic-only inspection misses.

Is the cheapest electronics quote a good deal?

Rarely. Electronics has a hard cost floor set by the bill of materials, so a quote well below the pack usually signals downgraded or recycled components, a cheaper non-certified chipset, or missing certification you'll pay for later at customs or in returns. Compare quotes on total landed, tested, certified cost — not the sticker unit price — and treat an outlier low quote as a diligence trigger.
